Joaquin “el chapo” Guzman and the Sinaloa Cartel – Topics of Study for en el Medio

When writing my latest book – en el Medio – a short novel/episode in the Lance Priest / Preacher spy-thriller series, I read quite a bit on Mexican drug cartels.

The story for this episode takes place mainly in Juarez, Mexico and involves some interesting and violent interaction with the Juarez Cartel by Preacher. In researching the Juarez Cartel, I learned about the other four major Mexican drug cartels with Sinaloa being the largest.

I started down the track of modeling a character after Joaquin Guzman. He has been on the run for a decade since escaping prison and is a noted sneaky and ruthless character. The news of his arrest this past week brought his run to an end (for now).

My research hadn’t led me to this tidbit about the Sinaloa Cartel expanding operations into Asia and Hong Kong in particular. Interesting development, and one we will have to take a closer look at for some upcoming novels and episodes.
