Private Eye Spies

First read about this private spy outfit in the New York Times. Interesting development, somewhat akin to the use of private contractors to support military, security, distribution and logistics since the beginning of the Iraq war.

If the NYTimes article would have been the extent of the story, that would have been interesting. But Wired has a multitude of pieces about this outfit and others all working on behalf of US intelligence interests, but no directly employed by the US government.

Michael Tanji posits how to change this private eye spy practice in this piece also in Wired. Not surprisingly, he blames Congressional inaction and status quo.

What’s the lie here? Its an open one everyone knows — there’s good money in government contracts. Sometimes a company just needs to convince someone in government that they can do a better job than government folks.
